Kouichi Okamoto: switch pola museum annex, Tokyo, Japan April 27th – June 3rd, 2012

In an exhibition curated by hexa project for show at the pola museum annex, japanese designer kouichi okamoto of kyouei design created two installation works, both focusing on the idea of the switch’. both works were created with the assistance of pola orbis holdings, and after its exhibition at the pola museum annex, the show will travel to london.

‘Lighting chair’ features two chairs: one whose seat and back plates are dotted with light switches.  Electrical cords run from the back of these switches towards the second chair, which is composed of  numerous electrical plugs into which the cords run. each plug/switch combination powers a single light out of the many suspended from a T-shaped platform, each  encircled by a mesh fabric shade.

‘Musical table’ involves the installation of 504 volume knobs and 504 music box movements, each of which plays a single sound. The boxes play at random, with their tempo determined by its corresponding volume knob on the table.

Edible’ Cookbook

28 Mar

German design agency Korefe has created the first cookbook you can read, cook and eat.

Called ‘The Real Cookbook’, the cook-able and edible cookbook is made of 100% fresh pasta, and gives you the recipe on how to make a classic lasagne at the same time.

Other than instructions, The Real Cookbook plays an essential part as one of the main ingredients in making the lasagne—pasta pages are used as sheets in a lasagne.

Once baked, the book becomes good enough to eat.

Dain Fagerholm

20 Mar

Illustrator Dain Fagerholm, of seattle, USA, has developed a portfolio comprised of hand drawn three dimensional GIFs he has named ‘stereographic drawings’. Stereographic images have existed for hundreds of years as a 3D illustrative technique tricking the eye with two parallel images captured with a minor difference in perspective shown at a close range to simulate a tactile quality. Fagerholm’s approach is quite similar to this antiquated approach, but, in place of hyper-realistic drawings or photos of landscapes or people, the artist instead creates an illusion of depth for his hand drawn mystical creatures to appear lively. in order to create stereographic sketches, fagerholm first sketches the monster figures, gems and surreal landscape with colorful markers or pens. The artist then converts his illustrations into stereographic GIFs, enabling his two dimensional drawings to become three dimensional, moving images.

Porky Hefer of Animal Farm

8 Mar

Biomimicry is a discipline whereby the design of nature and its various systems are examined and emulated in order to create sustainable solutions to solve real world problems. Analyzing the methods in which members of the ploceidae, or weaver bird family craft their beautifully artistic and humble dwellings, south african designer porky hefer of animal farm, one of this year’s Design Indaba conference speakers, references their intricate construction process and has produced a series of large-scale nests fit for humans based on the birds’ techniques. Porky’s series of ‘weaver’s nests’ have no real inner steel framework. Each are meticulously crafted out of all natural materials such as bark and branches and woven in such a way that the final form offers a sturdy retreat fit for at least 2 adults.

They should have these at camp grounds.

Landscape Light Sculptures by Barry Underwood

7 Mar

“These images are documentations of full-scale installations that are built on-site in the landscape. Using illusion, imagination, and narrative, my photographs explore the potential of the ordinary. I approach my photographic work with a theatrical sensibility, much like a cinematographer or set designer would. By reading the landscape and altering the vista through lights and photographic effects, I transform everyday scenes into unique images. Light and color alter the perception of space, while defamiliarizing common objects. Space collapses, while the lights that I install appear as intrusions and interventions. This combination renders the forms in the landscape abstract. Inspired by cinema, land art, and contemporary painting, the resulting photographs are both surreal and familiar. They suggest a larger narrative, and yet that narrative remains elusive and mystifying.”
