Pencil vs. Camera

Pencil vs. Camera’ by Ben Heine

‘Pencil vs. Camera’ by ivory coast-born brussels-based photographer ben heine is a series of images that inject hand-drawn pictures within real-life settings to create a composite effect that is often surreal and highly narrative. Manipulating the backdrop to host added elements such as real-life tetris blocks, floating speech bubbles, and an alcoholic panda, the photographs are an exercise in manual photoshop, always including heine’s hand which holds up the sketched piece of paper in the foreground.

Alarmingly accurate and crisply focused, the series puts great care in the alignment and perspective required to successfully pull off the optical illusion. heine creates seemingly effortless snapshots that are highly imaginative and contextual.

Have a nice day! :)

The ‘corner store’ bag collection by cast of vices the ‘corner store’ bag collection by LA-based jewelry designers cast of vices offers an upscale interpretation of everyday plastic bags. All pieces in the line are composed of lambskin leather and are hand sewn and hand embossed. their designs, however, are replicas of four plastic bag faces found in corner stores, shop stalls, and takeout restaurants throughout new york.

‘Born from a desire to create artifacts out of our vices’, the new line playfully attacks consumer culture, while also raising questions about the meaning of handmade artisan work. produced in small (17.5 x 8.5 inches) and medium (21.5 x 12 inches), the bags are available through the concept shop colette.

Photographic Master -Raghu Rai

26 Mar

Over his 40-year career as one of India’s most respected photographers, Raghu Rai has captured his native land in good times and bad, richly depicting the increasing complexity of living in what is now one of the world’s most rapidly developing countries. Equally adept at humorously evoking the day-to-day rituals and activities of Indian life (his breakthrough photograph, published in the UK’s The Times in 1966, was of a donkey that he had spent hours chasing across farmland) as he is at sensitively depicting the horrors of disasters such as the toxic spill in Bohal in 1984, Rai was invited to join the Magnum photographic agency in 1977, and has since been decorated with a string of international prizes. London’s Aicon gallery is currently mounting a retrospective of his work.

Advanced Style

24 Mar

“Seniors do it better, From textile mogul Iris Apfel in her trademark owl spectacles to artist Ilona Royce Smithkin in DIY orange eyelashes, the stars of photographer Ari Seth Cohen’s Advanced Style blog represent the most fashionable older ladies and gentlemen of New York and beyond. Featuring Cohen’s iconic style mavens in an exclusive short by filmmaker Lina Plioplyte. “Hearing them speak about clothing is so fascinating,” says Cohen, who launched his site in 2008 and also has a documentary in the works. “There is history and memories in what they are wearing and I think it’s important to show that storytelling aspect, as well as their vitality and creativity.”

Bad Dolls

24 Mar

Committed to chronicling the more sinister side of barbie’s picturesque life, self-taught photographer mariel clayton’s body of work is a collection of images depicting the doll as an aggressor of a number of gory scenarios.

Complemented with tongue-in-cheek titles, the outlandishly gruesome images often include ken, barbie’s on-and-off-again boyfriend, in the unfortunate position of victim: decapitated with a box of chocolate in hand, hung upside down and drained of his blood, scrubbing the floor with a sponge while naked on a leash, and many other unlucky roles.

Cereal Killer

20 Mar

“Remember cartoon-filled mornings as a kid in the 80s and early 90s? A time when all that mattered was wresting control of the remote from your big brother and mastering the marshmallow ratio in whatever totally ridiculous cereal you begged your parents for that week, because your next-door neighbor, Grace Cavadoy, had Fruity Marshmallow Krispies and GODDAMMIT you wanted them too!!! Ah…we’ve lost a lot of good brands since then.

So shotgun the sugar-saturated milk at the bottom of your Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle bowl and imagine “I Will Remember You” playing faintly, as we take a tempting trip back through all the cereals who’ve moved on to that Big Breakfast in the sky”.
