Classic portrait faces on modern bodies by Dorothee Golz

‘the pearl earring’ by dorothee golz diasec, c-print, 188 x 140 cm

“Vienna-based artist Dorothee Golz has created a digitally painted series in which classic portraits have been reimagined as well-recognized drawn faces visualized on modern bodies. Golz’s portfolio of hybrid pieces are born from her interest in historical artworks, social structure and the conception of gender roles both the renaissance era and today. The artist repurposes elements from the original work, stripping away the intention of the painter while infusing her own modern conception of the figures pictured.

First, the Golz begins by selecting an antiquated painting possessing a photorealistic quality in the vision of the sitter’s face. she then develops a studio setting in which to picture the modern body and renaissance face in a manner which may seamlessly combine both elements in a single still. Through the use of strategic lighting and particular positioning of the body of the sitter, the artist is able to re-envision the original artwork as a modern photographic representation. finally, the artist places the painted sitter’s head upon the digital image picturing the figure of a person from today in post production. In this way, Golz frees the painted renaissance persons from their stiff posture and conservative dress so that their facial expressions may be more recognizable to a contemporary audience”.

Charging gadgets with solar-powered urban infrastructure

18 May

“The ‘street charge’ concept takes into account the changing urban environment and our social need to stay connected at all times via our smartphones or androids. the simple intervention, developed by brooklyn-based studio PENSA! looks to harness the potential of our current street infrastructure as a platform in which to power-up our mobiles and other portable gadgets;
it makes use of what already exists, rather than considering that additional systems be installed on our sidewalks. PENSA!’s design would utilize photovoltaic cells to charge the integrated LED lighting and storage battery housed within the channel of sign structures. attached would be a shelf and bench, offering a so-called ‘rest stop’ for individuals to take a moment to read an e-mail or text a friend while giving their device a quick re-charge”.

Torafu Architects: Skydeck For Ishinomaki Laboratory

3 May

‘Skydeck’, a small table which is made to hook onto handrails of balconies or lookout points, has been created by  Japanese firm torafu architects. the functional surface is manufactured by ishinomaki laboratory which was established by designers and other individuals in the japanese city of ishinomaki when it was devastated by the tsunami on march 11, 2011. This collaboration between the initiative and torafu ensures that the portable design is manufactured by the people of this region as a means of supporting the local community while making the product commercially available to the consumer market.  Made from canadian red cedar, the ‘skydeck’ offers a surface in which to rest your mobile phone or radio, or can act as a counter  when you’re out on your balcony enjoying a drink. floating in the air, the ‘skydeck’ stretches a narrow balcony space out past its boundaries,  just a little bit further…

Saunders Architecture: Squish Studio

1 May

“Norwegian firm Saunders architecture has completed the ‘squish studio’, one of six commissioned artist studios along the coastline of fogo island in new foundland, canada. positioned within the eastern town of tilting, the 30 square meter building is perched upon the rocky terrain and supported with a system of stilts. Reaching 20 feet, the southern roof peak and generated angled outdoor area produce the main entry to the retreat. downward sloping to half the height at the opposing northern end, this trapezoidal structure’s name is derived from its ‘squished’ form while contrasting the local vernacular structures rooted within a strong irish heritage. the tapered exterior also serves to deflect strong coastal winds.

recently designated as a national cultural landscape district, transient artists may immerse within the creative process amidst an isloated setting. the tall entry leads to an internal spatial compression and horizontal work room which directs attention outward,
to nearby round head as well as the changing atmospheric conditions and crashing waves of the north atlantic. Built-in storage
is alternated with slits of windows, offering glimpses of the sunrise to the northeastern horizon”.

Spruce planks painted white clad the building’s external surfaces. completely off-grid, the structure’s electrcity and small kitchen
are powered with solar panels located atop a nearby hill while a compost toilet and wood burning stove complete day to day necessities. At night, a soft illumination creates a lantern effect, evoking the image of a lighthouse upon the cliff.

“This is a self-initiated typographic experiment that explores the relationships between upper-case letters and lower-case letters, and also records the transformation between them.

In this experiment, I drew shapes with ink on one or both of my hands, manipulating my gestures into the corresponding shape to signify an upper-case letter. Then, using the same shape on my hands, I manipulated my gesture or changed the perspective through which the shape is viewed in orderto transform the upper-case letter to a lower-case of the same letter. Removingor redrawing the darkened shape on my hands is not allowed in the experiment. The only way to make the model transform from an upper-case to a lower-case (orvice versa) is changing the gestures or the perspectives.

I created 26 sets of these inked shapes and drew them on my hands. Each set is made to create both an upper-case and a lower-case letter, such as A and a. I also created some italic letters, hand-writing letters and some new typefaces with the same shapes”.

PUMA by HUSSEIN CHALAYAN 2012 Spring/Summer Urban Mobility Backpack

15 Mar

Although one of the more frequented bag styles within the accessory repertoire of the on-the-go individual, the backpack often suffers from a lack of creativity and ingenuity. For Spring/Summer 2012, PUMA by HUSSEIN CHALAYAN introduces an off-beat iteration on the timeless model via the Urban Mobility Backpack. While retaining the same functionality with its two main compartments, multiple interior pockets and laptop sleeve, the Central Saint Martins graduate infuses the backpack with a colorfully lined hood effectively augmenting the pack with a level of fashion utility. Boasting a dark charcoal waxed exterior shell, taped black zippers and heavy metal hardware, the Urban Mobility Backpack affirm the PUMA Black Label dedication to both active sport inspiration and chic forward-thinking aesthetics.

Porky Hefer of Animal Farm

8 Mar

Biomimicry is a discipline whereby the design of nature and its various systems are examined and emulated in order to create sustainable solutions to solve real world problems. Analyzing the methods in which members of the ploceidae, or weaver bird family craft their beautifully artistic and humble dwellings, south african designer porky hefer of animal farm, one of this year’s Design Indaba conference speakers, references their intricate construction process and has produced a series of large-scale nests fit for humans based on the birds’ techniques. Porky’s series of ‘weaver’s nests’ have no real inner steel framework. Each are meticulously crafted out of all natural materials such as bark and branches and woven in such a way that the final form offers a sturdy retreat fit for at least 2 adults.

They should have these at camp grounds.
